Historic Black Section of Queens Gains Landmark Status

Addisleigh Park’s history “illuminates African-Americans’ struggle for and achievement of the basic civil right of home ownership,” read the proposal for this historic district on the Southeast side of Queens, NY. I loved growing up in the Laurelton section of Queens which is very close to the Addisleigh Park section of St. Albans, Queens. Many historic African Americans once called this place home. From jazz great John Coltrane to Lena Horne and others, the presence of these people remained in the neighborhood. Read more (here).

Tom Joyner mentioned this neighborhood and the story behind it this morning. I'm originally from Brooklyn, but I now live in ATL. My aunt lived in that neighborhood prior to moving south. When we visited my aunt's house growing up, she always mentioned the numerous people who lived in the neighborhood. I remember going to a James Brown BBQ that turned into a block party. The memories. Great post Skellz.
